SHANGHAI, Apr. 2 (Xinhua) — The 19th International Conference & Exhibition on Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG2019) opened in Shanghai on April 2. When the world is facing challenges from climate change and the energy industry is in a critical period for transformation and upgrade, global leaders in the oil and gas industry and experts gather together to discuss the active role natural gas will play in the global energy transformation, as well as new characteristics of the LNG market, new opportunities and the main challenges facing the industry.
Natural gas to play a major role in global energy transformation
Zhang Jianhua, head of the National Energy Administration, said in his Opening Ceremony speech that promoting natural gas production and consumption, and strengthening the LNG industry are vital to push energy transformation and sustainable development, and efficiently prevent and control air pollution.
Yang Hua, chairman of CNOOC, said that natural gas, the well-known high-quality, efficient, clean and low-carbon fuel, is considered an important “bridge energy” heading torwards a low-carbon world.
In 2018, global natural gas consumption reached about 3.86 trillion cubic meters, accounting for nearly a quarter of the primary energy consumption. “The ratio will further rise in the near future,” Yang predicted.
