Beijing Gas Group (BGG) provides natural gas to Beijing city, which, of the world’s mega-cities, is second only to Moscow in terms of natural gas consumption. BGG was the first company in China to supply over 10 billion cubic metres (BCM) of gas per year to a single city and its highest supply volume per day tops 100 million cubic metres. BGG supplies over six million households through 21,000 km of pipelines, using a mix of imported and domestic gas, offshore and onshore gas, conventional and unconventional gas.
Natural gas accounts for 32% of Beijing’s primary energy consumption (97% of its heat and 30% of power generation), making a real contribution to cleaner air. These numbers are set to rise. By 2020, the consumption of natural gas in Beijing is expected to exceed 20 BCM, the number of household users will reach 6.2 million and there will be an estimated 40,000 natural gas vehicles on the roads. Indeed, by 2020, natural gas will become the dominant energy and make up 36% of the primary energy mix in Beijing. BGG’s appetite for gas, from a multitude of sources including LNG, looks set to continue.
